Emergency Preparedness Week – May 2nd to 8th, 2021

Posted: May 3, 2021

"Be ready for anything”

Emergency preparedness week is an annual national event supported by Public Safety Canada working closely with provincial and territorial emergency management organizations, Indigenous organizations, non-governmental organizations, and the private sector that support activities at the local level.

The theme for this year is "be ready for anything”.  Your East St. Paul Emergency Preparedness Committee will be providing you with some information throughout the week.

There are a number of hazards and emergencies that can occur throughout our country.  In our municipality, we can face the following weather related events:

·       Extreme cold and the danger of wind chill

·       Extreme heat and humidity

·       Floods

·       Wildfires including grass fires

·       Tornados

·       Severe summer storms

In some situations such as spring thaw flooding, there may be some time available to prepare before the arrival of the event.  Not all floods however act in the same way.  Warm temperatures in the spring can lead to a very quick thaw and a severe thunderstorm can produce large amounts of precipitation leading to overland flooding.

Other emergencies that can affect our municipality include chemical spills, power outages and one that we have been experiencing for over a year now, a pandemic.

Being ready for anything means preparing in advance.  There are many simple things that we can do today in order to be ready should a hazard or other emergency occur in East St. Paul.

The rule of thumb preached by any emergency measures organization is that you should be prepared to be self-sufficient for a minimum of 72 hours.  In addition, you should have an understanding of basic first aid and general safety practices.  Often the "first responders” to an emergency are not fire, police or paramedics but people nearest to the event or hazard.

We are a society that has become very dependent on technology and other devices designed to make our life easier or make things convenient.  Can you guarantee the technology you want to access will be available during an event?

The East St. Paul Emergency Preparedness Committee looks forward to helping our residents celebrate "emergency preparedness week” and getting you "ready for anything”.
