Making East St. Paul accessible to all

The RM of East St. Paul is working to make its facilities, programs and services more accessible to all and would like to hear from you.

A survey posted on www.eaststpaul.com will help RM staff complete an Accessibility Plan that will support equal access and participation for all people, regardless of their abilities.

The RM's Accessibility Plan is a requirement of the Accessibility for Manitobans Act (AMA) and will be updated every two years.

The AMA was passed in the Manitoba Legislature in 2013 and provides "a clear, proactive process to identify, prevent and remove barriers to accessibility".

The RM of East St. Paul established a working group with representatives from administration, operations and the fire department and led by an accessibility coordinator to help identify barriers and complete the Accessibility Plan.

According to the AMA, an accessibility barrier is "anything that limits or prevents a person from participating in the social or economic life of our communities, including being able to receive information, services and goods, or access to space and activities".

The working group did a review to understand what the RM currently does to enhance accessibility and also looked for barriers.  The group looked at buildings, including but not limited to, the RM offices, fire department and arena to evaluate their level of accessibility regarding physical barriers.

Non-physical barriers were also considered.  Examples of non-physical barriers include attitude barriers, information/communication barriers, systemic barriers and technological barriers.

When completed, the RM's Accessibility Plan will identify the initiatives/actions it will take in the following categories:  customer service, employment, information/communication, the built environment as well as general measures.  The Plan will also provide timelines for implementing the change.

The RM is committed to making its programs and services as inclusive and welcoming as possible, which in part means preventing, identifying and removing barriers.

Please take time to complete the survey on the RM website.  It will be open until Jan. 31, 2018.  You can also take part in the survey by calling (204) 594-4403 during regular business hours on Tuesdays, Wednesdays or Thursdays, or you can pick up a copy of the survey at the Municipal Office, or the Operations building during regular office hours, Monday to Friday.  Your input is important as it will assist the RM in enhancing its Accessibility Plan.
