Holiday Season Safety Tips from the ESP Fire Department

Posted: December 19, 2017

The East St. Paul Fire Department wishes all East St. Paul residents a safe
holiday season and a happy, healthy New Year.

Listed below are some holiday season safety tips that will keep you and your family safe this holiday season:
  • Water freshly cut trees daily.

  • Check all sets of lights before decorating to ensure they are in good condition.

  • Never burn gift wrap, boxes, cartons, or other disposables in the fire place or wood stove.

  • Make sure you have working smoke alarms in every bedroom, outside each sleeping area, and on all levels of your home.

  • Make sure you have working carbon monoxide alarms on every level.

  • Make sure everyone knows how to get out safely if a fire occurs.

  • Use extension cords wisely – never place them under rugs.

  • Operate space heaters in accordance with manufactures recommendations, providing sufficient space from all combustibles.

  • Don’t leave burning candles unattended.  When you go out, blow them out.

  • Keep matches and lighters out of the sight and reach of children.

  • Watch what you heat!  Always stay in the kitchen when cooking.

  • Encourage smokers to smoke outside, and provide appropriate containers for disposal of smoking materials.

When shopping for items such as light strings, fans, extension cords, lamps and light fixtures, pay attention to the safety labels.  Standards organizations such as the Canadian Standards Association (CSA) and the Underwriter's Laboratories of Canada (ULC, cUL) authorize manufacturers to use their approval or certification mark on products that have been tested to meet applicable standards for safety and performance.

Protect your family this season with simple tips and practices that you can follow all year long.
